Trinity Cathedral welcomes Sunday School students from pre-school through high school and warmly invites all in the larger community who would like to join us! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the church office or our Sunday School coordinator, Mary Hogg. Sunday School meets from 9:25 a.m. until approximately 10:15 a.m., in designated Sunday School rooms on the lower level of the church's Haines Parish Hall, from September through May. Thank you and God bless you to all who donate their time and talent to this vital ministry of the Church.

To help you get to know the 2010/2011 Sunday School teaching staff, here are some biographical sketches of each of the teachers who will be working at the various grade levels.

Godly Play Staff—Preschool through 2nd Grade
Barb Hixon grew up in the Episcopal Church in Massachusetts. She joined Trinity Cathedral when she moved to Iowa in 1990. She has been involved in the Church School program since her daughters were little, teaching pre-K, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, and recently, Rite-13. Barb writes: “I have always been drawn to working with the young members of our church. It is so important that they feel safe and loved here. They should be comfortable asking questions. Take Godly Play: the image of sitting on a rug with soft lighting, surrounded by expectant children. They watch you build a story with beautifully carved wooden figures and they quietly wonder aloud…It doesn’t get much better than this!”

Lendol Calder will be teaching Godly Play along with Barb Hixon this year. Lendol is a professor of History at Augustana College, and is again looking forward to working with the young children this year at the Cathedral.

Nancy Tredrea has been the Godly Play leader in previous years, and believes strongly in the Godly Play curriculum. Nancy  will be substituting in Godly Play leadership.

Weaving God's Promises—3rd through 5th Grades
Mike and Ashley Ford are looking forward to helping teach the 3rd through 5th graders in the Weaving God's Promises Sunday School class this year. They have been involved in various youth activities the last few years and are excited to be teaching again this year!  Mike is an engineer at Monsanto, and Ashley is a stay-at-home mom to twin girls, Morgan and Hannah.

Anne Saveraid is married to Scott, and is the mother of Sally, 19; Carly, 15; and Sam, 8. She is a native of Davenport, and a graduate of Central High School and the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she double-majored in Marketing and Real Estate. Currently, Anne is a stay-at-home mom and a professional volunteer in many different activities. She has taught Sunday School on and off at Trinity since her daughter, Sally, was 3. Anne writes: “I have grown up in Trinity Cathedral, and have some wonderful memories of my own Sunday School/Youth Group experiences at this church. I hope to enrich the lives of these children and instill many of those same fond memories and knowledge that I gained.”

Kathleen Tarnow is very active in the Boy Scouts of America with sons Daniel and Joseph. She has been very involved through the years with various children’s ministries since having her own children. She has also taught on several levels in the Sunday School programs at the Cathedral. Kathleen writes: “I enjoy teaching and interacting with kids.”

Middle School Class—6th through 8th Grades
Jo Souder Vandecar is going to be starting her fourth year as a Sunday School class mentor, and she really enjoys working with young people in this age bracket. She has taught middle school and high school band and private music lessons for many years, mainly to students in this age range. Jo and her two children, David and Allison Vandecar, were confirmed at Trinity Cathedral in May of 2008. They have attended the Cathedral for about 3-1/2 years. Jo is also seen playing the flute with the choir at the 10:30 a.m. service many times throughout the year, and she enjoys Christmas caroling for the shut-ins.

Senior High Class - 9th through 12th Grades
Kathy Knight Calder grew up in Wichita Falls, Texas. She was blessed to have great experiences in the Sunday School and youth programs in the church where she grew up. Kathy writes: “The Christian education I received laid a solid foundation for my faith, and I eventually continued my education on a graduate level, earning a Master of Christian Studies degree from Regent College in Vancouver, B.C. (Canada). Being a parent myself now, I appreciate the generosity of the parents in my home church all the more, and hope to pass on something of what I received to the youth at the Cathedral. I hope that by teaching the high school group I can help them answer some of the questions teens have about the Christian faith, as well as help them use their own gifts in the church.” Kathy led a wonderful Bible Study class last year, and will do so again this year.

Elizabeth Axel will again work this year with the high school aged youth at the Cathedral. Elizabeth writes: “Teaching our group was rewarding, not because it was easy, but because it was a challenging learning experience. Our group not only was preparing a pilgrimage to Scotland, but also exploring weekly various aspects of the ‘Journey to Adulthood,’ especially within the context of our faith. We often had interesting conversations. I look forward to continuing to work with the youth.”

Trinity Cathedral Youth Group
Katie and Andrew Petersen moved to the Quad Cities in the fall of 2007. There were plenty of signs they were embarking on the right move—starting with a Google search that produced Trinity's webpage! As a teen, Katie was an active participant in youth activities in the Diocese of Springfield. Andrew was recently confirmed at Trinity Cathedral. Both enjoy working with young adults on a daily basis: Andrew is a prep sports writer at the Quad City Times and Katie is an English instructor at Black Hawk College and Scott Community College. They look forward to real discussions, learning and spiritual growth with the Youth  Group participants.
